The vendor is required to provide the department's k-9 unit with medical services.
- Police service dogs help protect our communities in a variety of ways including general patrol, suspect apprehension, area or building clearance, narcotics and explosives detection.
- These dogs are selectively bred, individually tested, and specifically trained for these activities.
- Breeds commonly used for police service dogs include German Shepard’s, Belgian Malinois, and Labrador retrievers.
- Requirements
• Vendor must specialize, or have expertise, in care for law enforcement service dogs. examples of work-related injuries include toxin ingestion (illegal substances), lacerations, musculoskeletal injuries, and gunshot wounds
• The american animal hospital association (AAHA) veterinary practice guidelines for police service dogs
• Provide dermatology services
• Provide dental care services
• Vendor must be able to perform advanced orthopedic surgery, general surgery/soft tissue surgery.
• Provide preventative health care and wellness services.
• Vendor must avoid separating dog from handler unless necessary
• Vendor must have minimized wait times and give priority to police service dogs.
• Vendor must take appropriate measures to keep dog, handler, veterinary staff safe.
• Vendor must take into consideration side effects of medication prescribed, if will impact dog’s senses required for duty.
