- Medical physicist responsibilities:
• Calibrate the linear accelerators, simulator, and treatment planning system in accordance with applicable regulations and protocols.
• Image registration and dose fusion for radiation oncologist’s treatment contouring needs.
• Direct computerized treatment plans for radiation therapy patients using eclipse or similar treatment planning systems.
• Assure plan documents are in accordance with the radiation oncologist’s prescription.
• document pertinent information in the radiation oncology record-and-verify system
• The calculation system used for plan calculation/secondary plan check and perform quality assurance.
• Perform quality assurance for each department plan.
• Check patient charts to assure the prescribed delivery of radiation
• Perform all necessary calculations, and plan evaluation for department brachytherapy (gynecologic).
• Evaluate new technologies and implement them as needed; direct acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment and treatment devices.
• participate in equipment planning and evaluation.
• Review and develop department policies and procedures related to radiation safety and radiation oncology physics.
• Maintain proper records for department or state and other regulatory agencies.
• Serve as a member of the radiation safety committee.
• Serve as a focal point for machine maintenance and repair, and provide monthly down time reports.
• Support the medical physics staff in radiation oncology.
• Educate and train medical physics, dosimetry, therapy, and physician staff with new techniques or modalities, as directed by the system physician lead for radiation oncology.
- Medical dosimetrist responsibilities:
• Prepare computerized treatment plans for radiation therapy patients under the supervision of a medical physicist
• Incorporate dose-limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and documents.
• Performance guidance on simulations as needed.
• Perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the radiation oncologist's prescribed dose, document all pertinent information in the electronic medical record (EMR) and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the medical physicist.
• Provide physics and technical support to the medical physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation oncology equipment.
• Perform or assist in the application of specific methods of dosimetry as directed by the medical physicist.
• Operate and perform quality assurance, under the direction of the medical physicist, for department and department plans; includes chart rounds meetings.
- Additional medical physics and regulatory survey preparation services:
• Perform department annual qc and prepare a report for department per department per year.
• Provide all necessary equipment and resources to complete these activities.
• Perform all quarterly, semi-annual, annual and other physics testing and reports as required by all relevant regulatory agencies.
• Review records, provide protocols, and training to ensure daily and weekly testing is being performed by hospital personnel.
• Any deficiencies will be documented and reported to the radiation oncology administration.
• Conduct comprehensive physics acceptance testing including temporary mobile placements to meet federal, state, local and department regulations.
• Perform department bunker shielding design, country shielding design, and department physics commissions.
