• Traffic and Safety: Person experience heavy and unsafe traffic patterns during arrival and dismissal; a new building footprint is expected to alleviate this.
• Facility Limitations: The current limited space hinders the implementation of STEAM and project-based learning. Most specialty services (PT, OT, SLP) must occur in a small space near the boiler room.
• Teaching Methodology: The District utilizes a traditional approach with self-contained classrooms. For Kindergarten, they aim to maintain a class size that does not exceed 23 pupils, per collective bargaining guidelines.
• Psychological Impact: Based on the experience with the school, the district anticipates that a modern, ADA-compliant, and secure facility will significantly improve student morale and community well-being.
- The study will review the issues identified in each school’s Statement of Interest and evaluate solutions that address enrollment, space needs, and program delivery.
- Key infrastructure systems are also outdated. The building still operates on its original 1952 electrical system, which is at maximum capacity, and the 24-year-old roof is leaking and requires replacement. In addition, the modular classrooms installed in 2002 have exceeded their intended lifespan and require major repairs to flooring, siding, and windows.
- The facility also lacks appropriate spaces for English as a Second Language (ESL) and specialized special education services, requiring some students to be transported to other schools to receive needed support.
