RFP Description

The vendor is required to provide that regulated medical waste disposal services for includes the collection, transportation, offloading, treatment, and final disposal of waste in a well-mannered landfill.
- Telecommunications and technology commission, and the department of transportation, that have separate and distinct purchasing authority, including the authority to contract autonomously under the state code or another provision of law.
- The university has 28,480 students and is recognized for its academic achievement; leadership in research; and its teaching hospital.
- Regulations cover areas such as air and water quality, solid waste management, landfill deposition, and all relevant occupational safety and health administration (osha) guidelines, particularly those concerning blood-borne pathogens.
- The services encompass the collection, transportation, off-loading, treatment, and final disposal (posttreatment) of waste in a legally and environmentally compliant landfill.
- University research related estimated annual waste:
• Sharps, gloves, gowns, bench paper, glass, plastic, animal bedding, etc. = 350,000 lbs
• Pharmaceutical waste (non-rcra tablets, vials and other dry pharmaceutical materials) = 5,000 lbs
• Small animal carcasses (< 50 lbs) = 40,000 lbs
• Large animal carcasses (50-300 lbs) = 15,000 lbs
• Paraffin wax blocks = 500 lbs
• Total estimated annual = 410,000 lbs
• Animal carcasses typically include mice, rats, cats, dogs, hogs and sheep. the largest animal would normally consist of a 200-pound hog or sheep. it is not inconceivable, however, that an occasional larger animal may be encountered.
• The university does not reduce the size of animal carcasses.
• Pharmaceutical waste consists of dry waste such as tablets, powder, formulations, and vials of pharmaceuticals
- Regulated medical waste may contain the following components:
o Personnel protective equipment, gloves, gowns, aprons, boots
o Infectious and non-infectious laboratory wastes and lab-ware
o Patient care items including bodily fluids, stained and soaked wipes, gauzes, bandages, wrappings, clothing and similar materials
o Sharps, scalpels, razors and instruments (metallic and non-metallic), culture dishes, syringes, needles
o Disposable bedding
o Human tissue samples fixed in approximately 2” square paraffin wax blocks.
