The vendor is required to provide two training events, and both training events can be for either certified interpreters or noncertified interpreters.
- Responsibilities
• Provide a lead trainer, presenters and additional evaluators if needed, ensuring appropriate knowledge about the required subject matter and the skills to present training and evaluation effectively.
• Assist deaf and hard of hearing services (DHHS) staff with the recruitment and selection of participants to ensure participants have the appropriate skills to effectively benefit from the training.
• Assist with the logistics of the training and oversee the conduct of the pre- and post-training evaluation services for certified or non-certified interpreters to determine effectiveness of training.
• Provide group trainings and provide all training materials, with a special emphasis on hands-on interpreting with very little (if any) theory discussions.
• Training shall be presented according to the established training schedule that is approved by dhhs.
• Provide and participate in a daily briefing to instructors to include a review of the activities that occurred for the day, making any necessary revisions for the next day, identify participants needing additional attention and provide a plan to address the participants’ needs, and review the mock evaluation schedule.
• Provide to DHHS daily attendance sign-in-sheets of participants
• Provide curriculum materials and handouts to training participants that are geared towards enhancing the skills of certified or non-certified interpreters to achieve desired certification.
• Provide an evaluator(s) to rate participant pre-test mock evaluations and provide extensive feedback to the applicant and DHHS using a template.
- Suggested learning objectives:
• Participants will develop a basic understanding of etymology, and break down words into synonyms and antonyms to improve english proficiency.
• Participants will identify and analyze reading comprehension elements (including but not limited to: main ideas, arguments, and transitions) to improve reading comprehension.
• Participants will name three (3) strategies for receptive interpreting (asl-to-signed english), as one of the portions for the intermediary certificate performance test.
• Participants will name three (3) strategies for receptive transliterating (signed english-to-asl).
• Participants will name three (3) strategies for sight translation (written english-to-asl), as one of the portions for the intermediary certificate performance test.
• Participants will be able to utilize study guides as a tool of preparation.
• Participants will be able to identify and discuss the interpreter certification testing process.
• Participants will be introduced to expectations and strategies for expressive interpreting, expressive transliterating, receptive interpreting, sight translation and receptive transliterating.
• Participants will have the opportunity to engage in individual, small and large group practice.
• Participants will understand the concept of deliberate practice as it relates to interpreting and ways that it can be incorporated to improve and enhance their interpreting work.
• Participants will be able to identify patterns of errors in their own work and ways that they can work on eliminating those errors.
