The Vendor is required to provide for on-demand sign language interpreters (SLI) and signing paraprofessional/communication assistants (SP/CA) services for the district.
- Understanding of educational content across subject areas (language arts, math, science, social studies), as interpreters may be needed for any class.
- Familiarity with school routines, confidentiality (FERPA/student privacy), Individual Education Plan (IEP) processes, and collaborative teamwork with teachers, teachers of deaf hard of hearing (TODHHs), and other school staff.
- High proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) (receptive and expressive) and fluent in English (spoken and written), to accurately and fully interpret both directions (spoken and sign, sign and spoken).
- Ability to interpret grade level academic content (vocabulary, concepts) clearly, and to adjust language/register appropriately for younger children or varying comprehension levels.
- Good knowledge of Deaf culture and sensitivity to language and identify needs of Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH) students.
- Ethical, impartial, and professional behavior, respecting confidentiality, avoiding taking on roles beyond interpreting (not counseling, teaching, or evaluating), following professional Code of Ethics (e.g., RID Code of Professional Conduct).
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work collaboratively with teachers, teachers of deaf hard of hearing (TODHH), support staff, students, and families, able to communicate effectively and professionally.
- Provide direct support to Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in classrooms, small groups, or other educational settings. Assist with communication, access to instruction, note-taking, and social interactions as directed by certified staff.
- Maintain professional boundaries and act under supervision, not responsible for teaching, interpreting, or evaluating students independently.
- Keep logs of services provided: date, time, location, student name, type of assignment (classroom interpreting, IEP meeting, extracurricular interpreting), and any relevant notes (e.g., communication mode, needed accommodations, follow up).
- Clear communication protocols for scheduling assignments, arranging coverage, documenting changes, and tracking caseloads, to avoid missed or inconsistent interpreting services.

1. Credentials
• Must have a high school diploma.
• Must hold a Georgia Paraprofessional license.
• Must either:
• Pass the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment, or
• Hold an Associates degree from an accredited institution
• Coursework or training in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture, or working with Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH) students is preferred.
• Must pass background check and clearance to work in K-12 setting.
• Background checks for in-person services must go through agency Human Resources process and will be conducted at the contracted vendor’s expense.

- Ability to assist students with technology and accommodations (e.g., hearing aids, FM systems, visual supports).
