The Vendor is required to provide from a paper-based model to one that is now digital, notably the receipt of evidence from police when charges are recommended, and subsequent review, vetting and disclosure to defense counsel, when charges are approved by crown counsel.
- Human translation services provide certified translations of the high quality required when a document has to be filed in Court, a relatively rare occurrence. There are four main drawbacks to using them in trial preparation: (i) the services are relatively expensive (around $0.35 per word); (ii) even at higher rates quality is uneven for a specialized field like the law and a poor translation will often get locked in at the point of certification; (iii) the process is time-consuming, potentially taking days or weeks and does not deal well with large volumes of text; (iv) human translators are generally free-lancers operating from their homes (even if a translation service brokers jobs for them), which poses significant human and data security risks which are not present when prosecutors and their staff use secure servers directly from their own secure network.
- Prosecutors operate on short deadlines (if not immediate need) and often prepare for trial outside of normal hours when a 24/7 automated service is only option. This is especially true given recent, extraordinary load pressures for bilingual cases. Automatic translation satisfies the need for quick, modifiable versions of internal or working documents used in preparing for witness examinations and cross-examinations, in written and oral pleadings and to better explain matters to investigators and victims who are not bilingual. In English-language cases but with French-language documentation, the service will give prosecutors the ability to understand large amounts of documentation and isolate those that may require a slower, more expensive human-created certified translation.
- Automated services offer important features that add flexibility and efficiency to operations: (i) the ability to ‘top up’ at a reduced rate from the automatic version to a certified one for key documents; (ii) the ability to quickly track versions and only translate new portions (reducing variability and inconsistencies between documents); (iii) the software’s ability to learn from previously accepted translations and to reprise technical terms in a uniform fashion better than a succession of human translators.
- The AI platform is an in-house development which provides an initial machine-translated version of each document.
- The translation is completed within seconds and the platform is able to translate multiple documents simultaneously.
