The vendor is required to provide to improve multifamily recycling rates. according to 2024 diversion rate data reported by waste management for the city, multifamily sector diversion was 26.5% compared to the residential diversion rate of 63.6%, indicating a great opportunity for improvement.
- Provide tailored technical assistance and education directly to multifamily residents and property managers, focusing on increasing diversion and decreasing contaminations.
- This will be done through door-to-door outreach to residents at multifamily residences that currently have access to compost and recycling.
- Outreach may include helping properties increase or right size their services.
• Increase composting rates: achieve a 30% increase in composting participation among multifamily property residents with compost service already on site.
• Enhance recycling practices: boost recycling rate by 25% while minimizing contamination, by increasing recycling volumes
• Educate residents: raise awareness and understanding of proper waste sorting and disposal techniques to address barriers to proper disposal.
- Strategies
• Partners coordination: communicate with property managers and waste management outreach coordinator to coordinate outreach strategies and efforts; including identifying service adjustments to right size containers, adjust capacity, improve signage, and potentially adjust locations.
• Educational visits: conduct door-to-door visits to distribute informational brochures, reusable tote bags for collecting recyclables, countertop compost pails, and answer questions about composting and recycling.  - Suggested strategies
• Survey and pledge: ask residents to take a pledge to compost and recycle responsibly and identify what they would need to reduce their contamination patterns.
• Interactive workshops: organize on-site workshops to demonstrate proper waste separation techniques.
• Community events:
• Recycling challenges: host competitions among properties to see which can achieve the highest recycling and/or compost rates.
• Family event: organize events targeting families with children where residents can learn about composting and recycling responsibly.
- Expected outcomes
• A summary report of work completed, outcomes and evaluation of strategies implemented, lessons learned, and next steps.
• Engagement with 15 properties, representing an estimated 400 units.
• A 30% increase in composting rates evaluated through outreach strategies.
• A 25% boost in recycling volume evaluated through audits.
• Significant reductions in waste contamination.
