The Vendor is required to provide development partners to design and build agrivoltaic research systems at two centers in state.
- These systems will be co-located with active agricultural operations at each site to serve as platforms for applied research, stakeholder education, and demonstration of dual-use solar technologies.
- Part of a broader research initiative to explore the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with agricultural production, commonly referred to as agrivoltaics or dual-use solar.
- The goal is to develop systems that generate renewable energy while supporting crop growth, livestock grazing, and long-term land stewardship.
- Objectives
• Generate clean energy while maintaining agricultural productivity;
• Support field-based research on crop performance, soil health, and energy efficiency;
• Demonstrate agrivoltaic configurations suitable for state climate, soils, and farming practices; and
• Serve as educational and outreach platforms for farmers, students, and stakeholders.
- Field layout: each site should support three replicated research blocks, with each block having two solar treatments and one control area having no solar infrastructure;
- Sensor integration: Systems must be able to accommodate sensors for monitoring microclimate, soil moisture, and crop performance;
- Array orientation: Flexibility to deviate up to 30 degrees from due south to align with crop rows and optimize shading;
- Panel type: Bifacial photovoltaic modules are preferred for research. If bifacial modules are unavailable or impractical, bidders may propose equivalent-performance alternatives that meet research objectives related to diffuse light utilization, shading impacts, and ground-level irradiance.;
- Dual-use potential: Systems should allow for future grazing or pollinator habitat integration, with appropriate fencing and signage as needed;
- Responsible for:
• Final system design and engineering;
• Procurement and installation of all components;
• Coordination with University researchers and site managers;
• Delivery of stamped engineering documentation and permitting support;
• Installation of PV systems and monitoring equipment; and
• Provision of operations and maintenance documentation and support.
